About Us
The
Gateway was established on 6 November 1972 by Doris Johnson. Her
daughter and inspiration for this establishment is currently still a resident
at The
Gateway Village.
During a meeting at
St Gabriel’s Church in April 1972, Dorris Johnson made an agreement
to lease the old Luipaardsblei Mine Hospital for use to start a school for
persons with mental and physical disabilities as she became aware of her own
struggle and need for such a school in the area.
The need was so
great, that within 3 years the premises has become too small for the number of
children attending and new premises had to be found.
During 1975
The School moved to Florida where children were taught in Zozo huts. Finally,
in 1978 after much research into the problems school leavers had finding jobs
in a secure and uplifting environment it was decided by Doris and The
Gateway Executive Committee that sheltered employment facilities should be
provided.
The Gateway Village
became a reality in 1979 when The Gateway Society bought 13 hectares of land in
Wilgespruit, Roodepoort and started developing the property. The first
residents were accepted on The Gateway Village in 1984.
The Gateway School
relocated to this property in 1995 and in February 1999 the Nedcor Hi-Care
Centre, that assist in the special needs of individuals with lack of mobility,
opened.
This year we
completed a home for our elderly residents and this is the end of Dorris's dream.
Our beneficiaries can be supported from age 3 until passing in
loving comfort and the correct care.
The Gateway Society
managed most of these projects through fundraising events and the support of
the community.
Today our Committe is
growing this dream to include more residential houses and a developed property
to secure the sustainability of our organization.
Our benificiaries
will forever be our "Angels" and our housemothers and teachers
our "angel keepers"
